sounds and silences: GHOST DOG
I love "Ghost Dog. The Way Of The Samurai" , with Jim Jarmusch and Forest Whitaker, two of my favorites, but now I'm referring to a mythical scene, unequalled. The gangsters have just discovered that Ghost Dog is a nigger and how they pull their faces is a poem. (I reproduce the glorious dialogue down there).

"Ghost Dog. The Way Of The Samurai" me encanta, con dos de mis favoritos, Jim Jarmusch y Forest Whitaker. Pero a lo que voy es a una escena que me parece mítica, inigualable. Se reúnen en un bar, el gánsgter italoamericano que en su día contrató a Ghost Dog como asesino a sueldo (es muy largo de explicar y tampoco quiero destripar nada a quienes, pobres, no hayan visto la película) y sus jefes. Están muy cabreados porque ha habido un imprevisto grave en el último encargo a GD y porque además descubren que éste es negro -los gánsgters italoamericanos de la vieja escuela, como bien se sabe, trabajan en familia, sin satélites, y menos con negros. Entonces empiezan a explicarse el origen de ese puto nombre tan absurdo, Ghost Dog, típico de los negros, de los raperos, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Ice Cube... y así. También les recuerda a los clásicos nombres indios, Red Cloud, Crazy Horse, que les generan casi el mismo desprecio. Sus caras torciendo el gesto son un poema. La conversación no da más de sí. Deciden encargar a alguien de la familia que zanje de una vez el problema con GD. Quién sería el más adecuado: Sammy the Snake (Sammy la Serpiente) Joe Rags (Joe el Andrajoso)... En fin.

- Ghost Dog?
- He said Ghost Dog!
- He calls himself Ghost Dog.
A lot of these black guys, gangster type guys, they all got names like that.
- (Mr Vargo) Is that true?
- He means like the rappers.
(Sonny) The rappers got names like that
- Snoop Doggy Dogg, Ice Cube, Q-Tip, Method Man.
My favourite was always Flavor Flav from Public Enemy.
(Sonny) He got the funky fresh fly flava. "Live lyrics from the bank of reality. "I kick da flyest dope manoeuvre technicality, to a dope track."
- I love that guy.
- I know nothing about that, but it makes me think about Indians.
They've got names like Red Cloud, Crazy Horse, Running Bear, Black Elk...
(Makes a sound like an elk)
(Nervous laugh)
- That kind of shit.
- Indians, niggers...same thing!
- Johnny!
- Sonny? Mr Vargo? Go outside.
